What is Cloud Computing

Dec 17

Introduced in 2007, cloud computing is a type of web-based processing, wherein shared software, information and other resources are made available to computers and other devices over a network or through the internet. Today, it is used by a lot of organisations primarily because of the numerous benefits that it offers.

Through the use of cloud computing, both small and mid-sized companies can enjoy the benefits of an enormous infrastructure without the need to directly implement and administer it. It also allows accessibility to numerous data centres in different locations across the globe. Companies also have the convenience of adding other services as and when they are needed from their cloud computing vendor without the need to pay for additional hardware.

Cloud computing is also an eco-friendly way of carrying out your business operations. Since the number of hardware components is reduced as they are replaced with cloud computing systems, energy costs and carbon dioxide emissions are also significantly reduced.

A simple example of how cloud computing technology works would be email. Through using services such as Yahoo Mail and Google’s Gmail, individuals no longer have to use Outlook or other types of desktop applications to view their email. This has allowed viewing email possible anywhere an individual is in the world, provided that there is an internet connection.

In 2007 Google cloud computing technology has given way to the development of word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications within its cloud computing environment and then integrated them into Gmail and Google Calendar. This resulted to providing a complete office environment over the internet (or in the “cloud”). Since then, more and more companies, both big and small companies have started experimenting and developing new ways to integrate the concept of cloud computing into their business operations.

Although there are some concerns which have been brought forward about the idea of storing all kinds of data and information in the cloud and the level of security that the information would have, cloud computing is certainly something that all business owners should look into as they establish or expand their operations. Among these concerns, the biggest one would be identity theft. However, cloud computing vendors such as Devnet, assure their clients that they are committed to security, allowing companies to take advantage of all the benefits of cloud computing technology without having to worry about anything else.
